Italic Final project: Shakespeare's Sonnets

Point Total: 200

Project description:
We've spent about a month on the Italic calligraphy hand and now it's time to put it all together.
For this project, you will visit the following link:
http://www.shakespeares-sonnets.com/sonnet/all.php

1. Please select one Shakespearean sonnet that you will be copying. Each sonnet has the same number of lines (14) so it's really about selecting a sonnet that resonates with you.

2. On smaller, scrap paper, I want you to sketch out a plan for your sonnet. I will be providing ONE and only ONE large sheet of bristol board for your final projects, so the better you prepare for this assignment, the fewer errors you will make.

3. With a pencil, line up your final papers to accommodate the 14 line sonnet.

4. With a pencil, sketch out SKELETAL letters of the words so you have proper spacing. Remember, the letter N, using this letter as your spacing between letters and words.

5.  SLOWLY, SLOWLY, SLOWLY, begin writing out your sonnet. Remember, you only have one sheet of paper, so it's up to you to be mindful of your work and focus on FORM.

6. Finally, add a decorative border around the edges of the paper to complete your sonnet.

Things I will be grading on:
1. Letterform, Are the letters adhering to the Italic calligraphy hand?
2. Are the defining marks of the Italic present in all of your letters? (Triangles, 45 degree edges)
3. Are all of your letters leaning forward to the right in the same 5-degree angle?
4. SPACING: Have you taken proper consideration to have consistent spacing between letters and in between words?
5.  Effort: Is this a rushed piece, or have you taken adequate consideration and effort with ALL aspects of your lettering and design?

Art Symbols

Before you even begin today's assignment, please look at the following link: http://symboldictionary.net/ I want you to go through and find symbols to incorporate in your assignment, keeping close attention to what meaning each animal, flower, or symbol represents. Remember, for this assignment, you can't doodle random hearts or flowers, you have to do a bit of research first to determine what each means and if it is meaningful to your family.
